Your hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis—the command centre for your stress response—took diligent notes. 'Ah,' it decided, 'you need peak alertness and fuel at 10pm for dancing. And you can coast on fumes at 8am because nothing is required.' After nine days of this intense training, the new routine is baked into the schedule. The problem is that this system is like a city's power grid; it has enormous momentum and cannot be rerouted instantly. Caffeine doesn’t create energy; it just mutes the fatigue report. This allows you to push an already exhausted system further into deficit, propping up the dysfunctional rhythm. Because caffeine has a long half-life, afternoon doses often elevate evening cortisol, which makes it even harder to sleep and perpetuates the cycle. You're not fixing the engine; you're just disabling the alarm.
What should I eat to recover faster?
Focus on protein and fat, especially at breakfast. A protein-first breakfast eaten within an hour of waking helps to anchor your cortisol curve for the day. It provides a steady source of energy without the spike-and-crash of a high-carb meal, sending a powerful signal to your system that the famine-and-feast cycle of the festival is over. Avoid sugar and refined carbs, especially in the morning, as they will only perpetuate the blood sugar chaos your body is already trying to escape.
