Sunday-night dread · Sunday evening, 30-60 minutes before usual wind-down · 12 minutes
Why it works
Sunday evening dread often stems from an overactive sympathetic nervous system anticipating the week ahead. This routine focuses on shifting autonomic tone. By engaging the vagus nerve through specific breath patterns and targeted somatic release, we reduce cortisol signaling and increase parasympathetic activity. This re-establishes a more balanced physiological state, promoting a sense of safety and reducing the perception of threat, which often underlies anticipatory anxiety.
Supported Supine Breath — Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat, and a small cushion under your head. Place one hand on your chest, one on your abdomen. Breathe slowly, allowing your exhale to be slightly longer than your inhale, for 3 minutes.
Jaw and Neck Release — While still supine, gently open your mouth as wide as comfortable, then slowly close. Repeat 5 times. Then, turn your head slowly to the right, hold for 15 seconds, and return to center. Repeat on the left. This releases tension in the masseter and scalene muscles.
Warm Magnesium Broth — Sip 4-6 oz of warm bone broth or a plain vegetable broth. Add 100-200mg of magnesium glycinate powder, allowing it to dissolve fully. Drink slowly, noticing the warmth and subtle taste.
Tongue to Palate for Focused Calm — Integrate the 'Tongue to Palate for Focused Calm' technique. Place your tongue gently on your palate behind your front teeth. This subtle engagement can shift focus and support nasal breathing, which promotes calm. Tongue to Palate for Focused Calm
Gentle Spinal Roll — From your supine position, bring your knees to your chest and gently rock side-to-side for one minute, massaging your lower back. Then, place your feet back down, bridge your hips slightly, and slowly lower. Repeat 3 times.
