POST-CONFLICT REPAIR · immediately after or some hours post-conflict · 12 minutes
Why it works
Following conflict, the sympathetic nervous system is often over-activated, leading to elevated heart rate, muscle tension, and altered breathing. This sequence directly engages the vagal afferents through gentle pressure and slow movement, signaling safety to the brain. The oral intake of minerals supports cellular electrolyte balance, crucial for nerve impulse transmission. Conscious orienting helps re-establish safety cues, reducing the persistent threat response and promoting parasympathetic activation. These actions collectively assist in down-regulating the HPA axis response.
Replenish Electrolytes — Drink a small glass (150-200ml) of cool water mixed with a pinch of sea salt and a squeeze of lemon. Sip slowly, noting the taste and temperature as it moves down. This isn't hydration, it's cellular support.
Orbital Softening — Lightly place your fingertips on your temples, just outside the outer corners of your eyes. Close your eyes and breathe slowly for 90 seconds, softening the tissue around your orbital bones. Release any tension in your jaw.
Compress the Hands, Lengthen the Trunk — Integrate the daily practice outlined in Compress the Hands, Lengthen the Trunk. Focus on the lengthening sensation as you follow the steps.
Gentle Head Nods — Find a comfortable seated position. Slowly nod your head forward, just enough to feel a gentle stretch at the back of your neck. Lift your head equally slowly. Repeat 8-10 times, synchronizing with your breath: exhale down, inhale up.
Supported Recline — Lie supine on your back on a firm surface. Place a thin cushion or rolled towel under your knees. Allow your arms to rest away from your body, palms up. Bring your attention to the contact points of your body with the ground. Stay here for three minutes.
