You find yourself standing in front of an open fridge with no hunger, or with your thumb hovering over a shopping app, seeking a dopamine hit that never quite lands. At night, you feel tired but wired, your heart racing when you lie down. You feel anxious for no reason, disconnected from your body, and the instruction to ‘write down your feelings’ feels like being asked to describe the colour of the wind. It’s a state of agitated exhaustion, and no amount of positive affirmations seems to touch it.

Your brain predicts, it doesn't just react

Based on past experiences and incoming sensory data, it constantly generates a hypothesis about what’s happening and what’s about to happen. Anxiety, in this model, is a prediction error. When this channel is clear—when your interoceptive accuracy is high—the brain gets clean, reliable data. Its predictions are more accurate and less alarmist. When the channel is noisy or you’re disconnected from it, the brain is guessing. And under conditions of chronic stress, it guesses 'danger'.
Somatic journaling is a way to manually clean up that data stream. - The Before-and-After: Before and after a simple regulatory act—like a 5-minute walk, drinking a glass of water, or one of the 60-second Hacks—write down one word to describe the physical shift. From 'tight' to 'soft', 'buzzing' to 'still'.
- Map the Signal: Next time you feel a strong emotion, grab a piece of paper and draw a simple outline of a body. Instead of writing words, just shade in the areas where you feel the sensation most intensely. This is cartography, not confession.
