The AI's report is a weather forecast for a different city. Your job is not to debug the data, but to look out the window at your client's actual weather.
A coach in the Certifications program told me last week her client was panicking because his wearable showed 'bad' HRV for three days straight. He felt fine, was sleeping okay, hitting his lifts. But the number was red, so he was spiraling. This is the new digital hypochondria, and the obsession with coaching with data is training the clients into it. Kokorology think more data means more clarity. It usually just means more noise, another performance metric to fail.

The client was feeling rested, but now they're "anxious for no reason" because an app told them their deep sleep was suboptimal. Suddenly they're questioning everything: was the evening meal wrong? Is the new supplement not working? They’re tired but wired, caught in a loop of self-diagnosis, and you're now spending the first ten minutes of your next session talking them down from a number on a screen instead of talking about their life. You feel less like a coach and more like amateur IT support for the quantified self.

What is HRV and why is everyone obsessed with it?
Heart Rate Variability is the beat-to-beat variation in your heart rhythm, managed by your autonomic nervous system. It’s become a popular proxy for "resilience" or "recovery." A high HRV suggests your system has the flexibility to adapt to stress. A low one means it's under significant load. It's a useful signal, not a moral report card.
Should I tell my clients to ignore their wearable data?
No, that’s just another form of avoidance. The skill is to teach clients how to hold it lightly. To treat it as one data point among many—less important than their own felt sense. The goal is to build interoception, the ability to feel your own internal state, not outsource it to a wristband.
How can data be useful in coaching then?
Data is for pattern recognition, not daily performance reviews. Look at the weekly or monthly trend line, not the Tuesday score. Is HRV consistently tanking after a specific type of workday? Is sleep architecture always fragmented after late-night eating? The trend is the story, not the single data point.
What's the biggest mistake coaches make with data?
Treating the number as the problem. The number is never the problem. The number is a lagging indicator of a structural issue in the client's life, environment, or nervous system. Your job is to find the source of the load, not to chase a higher sleep score.
Your Client's Sleep Score Is a Lagging Indicator
The wellness industry has sold the system a dangerous fantasy: that health is a video game you can win by hitting the right numbers. Get your sleep score over 85, your HRV over 60, your readiness at 90%. The problem is, your biology doesn't care about your score. I used to be religious about my own data, until I realized I was letting a number on my wrist tell me how I felt, overriding my own senses. It's a subtle but profound abdication of self-trust.
A 'bad' sleep score isn't a failure to perform at resting. It's a receipt for yesterday's stress. It's the check engine light coming on after you’ve been driving for 50 miles with the parking brake partly engaged. Arguing with the score is like yelling at the light. The work is to figure out why the brake was on in the first place.
The Signal, the Noise, and the HPA Axis
That single HRV number your client is fixated on? It’s a momentary snapshot of a conversation between the sympathetic (gas pedal) and parasympathetic (brake pedal) branches of the autonomic nervous system. But this conversation is influenced by everything: the burrito they ate for lunch, an annoying email, the humidity, whether they’re ovulating. It’s incredibly noisy.
The real signal lives upstream. The master control loop is the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis—the system running from your brain to your adrenal glands that decides when to flood you with cortisol. Chronic activation of this axis is what creates high allostatic load: the cumulative wear and tear on your body from being in a constant state of low-grade emergency. That's what consistently drives HRV down over weeks and months. One bad night is weather. A bad month is climate change.
The Weather Report for a Different City
I tell coaches in the Performance L2 course to think of wearable data as a weather forecast for a different city. It might be nearby, it might have a similar climate, but it is not a perfect description of what is happening right outside your client's window. Your job as a coach is to make the client the primary source of data.
The client who says, 'I feel exhausted but my ring says I'm recovered'? Believe the client. Their subjective experience—the felt sense of fatigue, the brain fog, the low mood—is the ground truth. The data is, at best, a conversation starter. 'That's interesting the ring says that. Tell me what exhausted feels like in your body right now. Where do you feel it?' This turns the focus back from the external number to their internal world. It builds the skill of interoception.
Stop Chasing Outputs, Start Auditing Inputs
The impulse to 'fix' a bad number is seductive. It feels productive. It is also a complete waste of time. You cannot directly will your HRV to be higher or force your brain into deep sleep. These are outputs of a complex system. You can only control the inputs.
What are the inputs? Light, food, movement, temperature, and social connection. That’s it. Instead of asking 'How do I improve my sleep score?', the real question is 'What is the quality of my inputs?'. Am I getting morning sunlight to set my circadian rhythm? Am I eating in a way that creates metabolic chaos or stability? Am I moving enough to create a real need for rest? This is the core of real nervous system regulation.
The Three-Question Filter
When a client brings you a piece of data, don't engage with the number itself. Run it through this three-question filter. I use this constantly in my own coaching practice.
- How do you feel? (Privilege their lived experience first.)
- What does this number tell the system that Kokorology didn't already know from how you feel? (Often, the answer is 'nothing.' This reveals the data's redundancy.)
- If this number were green instead of red, what would be different about how you approach your day? (This exposes how much authority they're giving the app.)
The goal of these questions is to shrink the data's importance and return the client to their own body as the primary source of truth. It's a simple, powerful reframe.
What to do this week
- Declare a data moratorium for one client. For the client most obsessed with their numbers, ask them to take their wearable off for three days. Have them track their energy, sleep, and mood with a simple pen and paper in the Journal instead. Discuss the difference.
- Practice the Three-Question Filter. The next time a client—or you—looks at a piece of health data, immediately ask: 1. How do I actually feel? 2. What new information is here? 3. How would my behavior change if this number were 'good'?
- Audit your inputs, not your outputs. Pick one input for this week: light. For seven days, get outside for 10 minutes within the first hour of waking. No phone. Just you and the sky. Notice the effect on your energy late in the day. This isn't a 'hack'; it's foundational circadian biology.
