Your body is constantly communicating its state through a sense you can’t see, taste, or touch. The technical term for this is interoception: the perception of your own internal condition. This stream of sensory data is processed in brain regions like the insular cortex, which acts as a kind of internal sensory switchboard. The insula integrates signals from your organs, muscles, and tissues to create the felt sense of your body's moment-to-moment state—your mood, your energy, your discomfort. Where in your body do you feel the demand of the last hour? Name the specific sensation. Is it a tension behind the eyes, a shallowness in your breath, a knot in your stomach?
- Set a timer for five minutes. Put your phone on silent and turn it face down.
- Open a notebook. Write today’s date and the prompt at the top of the page.
- Answer only the prompt. Do not write a story or analyse why you feel that way. List the physical sensations. Use concrete, sensory words: 'buzzing', 'tight', 'heavy', 'hollow', 'cold', 'sharp'. If you feel nothing, write 'numb' or 'nothing'.
- When the timer goes off, close the notebook. Do not re-read what you wrote. The work is done.
Common Questions
Why can't I just set a timer for breaks?
You can, but it’s a different tool for a different job. A timer is an external command that you can easily learn to ignore or resent. It prompts an action (stop working). This journaling practice builds the internal skill of attention (notice your state). A timer teaches you to obey a clock. This practice teaches you to listen to your own body. One is external discipline, the other is internal literacy.
Does this have to be a physical journal?
A pen and paper are often better because they get you away from a screen, which is frequently the source of the cognitive load in the first place. The posture, the blue light, and the infinite potential for distraction all keep your nervous system in a state of low-grade activation. The simple, non-digital act of moving a pen across paper provides haptic feedback that can be grounding in itself. That said, the consistency of the practice matters more than the medium. Use whatever tool you will actually stick with.
What if I don't feel anything when I check in?
That’s also data. 'Numbness' or 'nothing' is a common and valid sensory report from a system that is overwhelmed. It is a protective mechanism, the physiological equivalent of turning down the volume on a speaker that is distorting with feedback. It is an active state, not a void. Write 'numb' and note where you feel it (or do not feel it). Treat 'numb' as a colour on the palette, not a blank canvas. The practice is about the act of looking, not what you find.
